The TPM-903 Transportable Radiation Portal Monitor is designed for rapid screening of personnel in the event of radiation incident. It provides early warning of hot spots and has design features suited for monitoring radiation workers or the public. The design of the monitor is lightweight and mobile to facilitate transport to a location where it is easily installed within seconds.

The portal accommodates walkers or wheelchairs. Users are first detected by the occupancy sensor which switches the detectors from updating the background into scan mode. The alarm is given if the counts exceed a predetermined level; if not, the green “ready” clear light remains on. Passage time is typically 1 second and a Reliably Detected Activity (RDA) of 1 µCi in a 25 µR/h background is demonstrable.

Setup of the Portal Monitor is quick and easy. Simply clamp the pillars to the floor stand with the thumbnuts provided. Make the MHV connections and slide the crossbar into its fitting. Connect the D-cell batteries and switch on. With preset parameters, self-testing is complete in 2 seconds and background is acquired in 20 seconds. If parameters need adjustment, the LCD display prompts the operator for setup values which are entered via the password-protected keyboard.

Alarm level, time and date, signal amplitude discrimination level, resetting of occupancy sensor and detector variance tests are all adjustable.

The Portal Monitor is supplied in a ski-style bag with just 5 major pieces: 2 support stands, 2 vertical pillars and the cross bar which holds the controller. With a total weight of only 90 lb, it can easily be wheeled or carried into place.

The Monitor operates equally well on AC power or 6 alkaline “D” cell batteries which provide over 40 hours of uninterrupted use.
